Can the Commercials, Boycott ITV`s World Cup!!!

flyingmonkey (Elite) posted this on Wednesday, 19th June 2002, 12:42

I reckon supporting the Football League in its fight against ITV is a worthwhile cause.

How many of you are going to join me in boycotting ITV`s coverage of the England team?

For more deatils on how to support the Football League, follow the links below:

I`m not boycotting ITV because of the football league - it was stupid of OnDigital to pay so much for something that would appeal to only a limited audiance, but then the FL could have accepted a lesser deal when things went pear shaped .....

I`m boycotting ITV because the BBC coverage is better.

Yeah but if you are offered a lucrative deal you are gonna take it!!!

If your boss offered you a pay rise right now, you wouldn`t knock him back would you!??!

I`ve had On Digital and I believe they could quite easily have survived and been a decent rival to Sky, however they seemed to lack one thing - a decent service - the box was crap, the remote was crap and the signal was temperamental!! they should have sorted this out first before handing out huge sums of money in the hope that the football would attract subsribers.

I remember reading an article outlining how much their advertising campaign was costing when split between the number of subscribers and it worked out that they spent £250 for each subsriber. The customers spend less than that on subscription fees per year so simple maths tells them that they are not making money.

A contract is a contract and you certainly can`t blame the football league for the mistakes made by ITV Digital. To sign a contract and then expect the FL to accept a lesser amount is pathetic. Its like going into HMV buying a DVD and then returning the next day telling them you think it was too expensive and that they should give you some money back.

This is ITV whe are talking about here!

Anyway, as a fan of a Div 1 team (soon to be Premiership) I`ll definately be watching BBC1 (also because Ian Wright is funny as fcuk!)

I agree, Ron Atkinson really knows how to spoil a football commentary, think I`d rather listen to country music...

Hurray for Mottie and Brooking! Even if Lineker is a bit wet.

I certainly would`t turn down a huge pay rise, but then if my boss came up to me and said they couldn`t afford to pay me the agreed price, and the compnay would go titsup if I didn`t - along with me knowing that the even the new offer is far more than what I am worth - I would probably accept it.

Is it me or does ITV just ruin decent presentors? Bob Wilson - great with the BBC, crap with ITV. Des Lynam - great with the BBC, pants with ITV.

And the pundits are better on the BBC - Gazza is, well, complete rubbish, Andy Townsend is rough, Bobby Robson & Alley McCoist are the best among them (Although Peter Smichal is a bit of a duffer for the BBC)

I don`t know which game it was, but Big Ron`s advice to one particular player was that he should `Open his feet up` (???) T-wat!

The BBC have exelled themselves methinks with this world cup, especially with the interactive extras. I`m not usually a big fan of the BBC, but after ITV`s football league disaster, they can turn my eyes square (or rectangular for all you w i d e a n g l e buffs) for a few days more.

I can`t understand why people would want to boycott ITV relating to the ITV Digital Issue.
At the time of the agreement both sides must have seen huge risks with the deal. Outside the premiership, and maybe one or two other clubs in Div 1, attendances at matches are crap. This would suggest that the `demand` for this type of entertainment (2nd rate footy)is not high. Nationwide Clubs, and the Football league seriously overvalued there `assets` and unfortunately, ITV Digital paid the price!

The facts are people didn`t want to pay at the turnstile or pay-per-view for these games....the Football League must understand this and be realistic about the future of the Lower Divisions. If Clubs can`t stand on their own two feet, tough.
The football romantics will no doubt chip in with the cliches like `Grass Roots Football will disappear"...it doesn`t have to disppear, if these crummy Clubs pay wages that the club can sustain without relying on handouts.

That`s my view,
Neil.
