Time for a look at what is coming our way from Carlton Visual Entertainment in May, which to start with includes an update on a certain Jordie filled title which was supposed to arrive later this month. The four volume Auf Wiedersehen Pet: Series 1 discs have been put back till 27th May, along with the Series 1 Mini Tool Box Set, whilst the Auf Wiedersehen Pet: Series 2 discs will now street on 24th June, along with its box set. Also come October you will be able to buy all eight discs packaged together as a collector's toolbox set, although we have no price for this yet.
Now for the newly announced discs, the first of which all street on 13th May, and include the scifi series Cleopatra 2525, from the same stable as various other well known Sam Raimi cult programmes. Starring Jennifer Sky, Gina Torres and Victoria Pratt, this comes out as two volumes with 7 episodes per release, with full frame transfers, Dolby Surround soundtracks and a recommended retail price of £19.99.
Set in a world turned upside down, monstrous airborne creatures known as the Baileys have driven the world's population underground and taken over the Earth's surface. While most of humanity has abandoned hope of ever reclaiming the surface of the earth, there are those who remain fiercely committed to the cause. Among these brave souls are the female warriors Hel and Sarge. They are joined by Cleopatra, a twenty-first century exotic dancer who wakes up 500 years after being cryogenically frozen. They are united in the most courageous of quests, to restore humanity to its rightful place on the planet.
Also out this day are three discs from The Terry-Thomas Collection, all featuring the Finchley born Thomas Terry Hoar Stevens. No details on sound or video, but we think its pretty safe to say these are all in digitally remastered full frame transfer with Dolby Mono soundtracks. The retail price for each disc will be £9.99, whilst all three will also be part of a limited edition box set for £24.99.
Make Mine Mink sees retired major Terry-Thomas, ex-con Billie Whitelaw, eccentric dowager Athene Seyler and the disgruntled teacher of etiquette Hattie Jacques reside in a boarding house. The group turn into modern day Robin Hoods, stealing furs for charity. This features cameo appearances from Kenneth Williams, Irene Handl and Clement Freud.
Too Many Crooks sees a gang of incompetent crooks played by George Cole, Sid James and Bernard Bresslaw, unsuccessfully attempt to rob Terry-Thomas's tight-fisted millionaire, but then decide to kidnap his daughter instead. Whilst finally The Naked Truth sees Terry-Thomas join up with Peter Sellers, Shirley Eaton, Joan Sims and Peggy Mount as a group of celebrities and VIPs who are being blackmailed by the sleazy editor of a scandal rag.
The last disc for the 13th May is the digitally remastered war classic The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp: Special Edition, featuring Anton Walbrook, Roger Livesey, Deborah Kerr. Arriving digitally remastered in its original full frame aspect ratio with a Dolby Mono soundtrack, extras include a making-of documentary, stills gallery and biography for the retail price of £15.99.
British officer Clive Candy is sent to Berlin to trap a German spy during the Boer War. There he befriends a German officer, Theo, who marries the girl Candy is in love with. During the First World War, Candy marries a girl who resembles his lost love and helps Theo, now a prisoner of war, to be repatriated. Candy comes back in the Second World War as a Brigadier General and once again encounters Theo. On joining a Home Guard exercise, Candy is captured, and the two are forced to either aid or betray each other.
Moving on to 20th May we have Morecambe & Wise: The Movie Collection, which is a special collector's edition box set of three comedy features containing Eric and Ernie, priced at £24.99. Each of these discs will also be available separately on the same date for £9.99. Alas no details on sound or video for these either, so expect full frame and Dolby Mono affairs.
The Intelligence Men sees the pair playing bungling spies who attempt to infiltrate an enemy organisation to prevent the assassination of a Russian ballerina. That Riviera Touch has them as traffic wardens, setting off to the south of France in their vintage car after a run-in with royalty. Unluckily, a gang of thieves think they would be the perfect cover for a smuggling operation.
Finally The Magnificent Two has the pair playing travelling salesmen who set off to a South American banana republic. On arrival, Eric is mistaken for a rebel leader and forced, on pain of death, to pose as his doppelganger, but when he has to make a speech on TV, his abductors get more than they bargained for.
