Firmware exists in the shady boundary between Hardware and Software. DVD Players, Decoders and other Hardware holds microchips which operate using code embedded in them. This code governs how they function. This is considered Firmware because although it is not changed very often, or at all, it is still alterable code. Therefore, they may be different versions of Firmware inside players that seem identical. Some DVD players allow the upgrading of their Firmware by putting an upgrade CD in the try. These terms are shared with the computer world. |
