Transfer spending since 2000 for the "Big 4"

1mills (Elite) posted this on Monday, 9th July 2007, 12:32

Been having an argument with Liverpool fans this weekend in regards to spending as they believed that Utd had spent 100`s of millions more than Liverpool in recent years so I`ve just copied and pasted all the info, and sent email so thought I would put a copy on here as it seems to come up quite a lot.

Total net spending Since 2000

Chelsea= £289.74 million
Man Utd= £132.65 million
Liverpool= £85.796 million
Arsenal= £42 million

The above doesn`t take into account Malouda into Chelsea, Reyes out of Arsenal, but does take into account the money in for Bellamy and Cisse.

In fairness aswell, Man Utd are expected to bring in around £15million from the sale of Richardson, Heinze, Silvestre, Smith and have finished spending for the summer (you would think), whereas Liverpool are expected to spend around £20million at least on two more players.

That means the difference in spending at the end of the summer you would expect to be around £13million which over 8seasons isn`t anything especially considering that takes into account the £50odd million spent this summer plus Ruud, Rio, Veron and Rooney.

If you only take into account Benitez`s reign it`s £62.32million net spending and Ferguson`s spending for the period since he took over is £88.3million. Again if you take into account the spending expected by Liverpool and money coming in for Utd it looks like it will probably end up near enough the same, and if anything Liverpool will have spent more money that Utd since Benitez took over!!

Wegner`s net spending for his whole time at Arsenal is £49million. Puts everyone else to shame!!!

IM not aware we`ve definately sold these people - is this the case ? if so how much? if not how can it be included?

From the stuff I posted a few weeks back I think Benitez`s net was about £43mill before Torres was bought / Garcia sold. Ive heard the net of all that was about £20 mill which would take it to £63mill ish as you report - that figure, I suggest, does not include money received for Cisse or Bellamy so I think that adjusts the figures slightly

As i said in the paull argument forum in my "objective" review. There is not a huge gap between Utd and Pool spending in recent years, however, United have still just about spent more and when you consider Liverpool is a re-building job (of greater scale then Uniteds has been during a few trophyless years) id expect them to be havnig to spend more than they might have done

EDIT : I have just read i nthe paper that WHU have agreed a 7.5million deal with Liverpool for Bellamy - just got to sort out some loyalty bonus payment or something. Not bad work id say

I`ll check those figures now I knew the deal with Bellamy was imminent and so is Cisse but they were shown as done on a few sites I checked for comparison. (It`s got Bellamy out for £8mil and Cisse for £6mil)

I think the difference is because I`ve done it on a season by season and technically Cisse was signed that summer so that £14million is probably making a difference and maybe yours is including Heskey as a sale for Benitez? Unsure as you`ve only given figures, not transfers in your list.

As I know there are a lot of Spurs fans on here, I`ve just done a quick check and their total net spending since 2000 comes in at £76.797million (and that`s including Bale`s fee as £5million, I thought it was around £10million in total?)

From the paper and what ive heard over last 7 days they seem fairly stated figures

Well I took the figures I used for Pool from the site that paull used (after all i was trying to prove to him that his claims we`d spent £120million in Benitez`s three years and that we`d outspent united was way off the mark) and as I had less than one hour to put together the list I wasnt going to research and create a listing

You could be right on the reason why your figure comes out to a similar net spend over Rafa`s period in charge if they/you have attributed CIsse`s purchase as his. Cisse was £14 mill which would offset £6m for his sale + £8m for bellamy

The £14million for Cisse should be attributed to Houllier. The deal was done long before the summer that Houllier (the French tosser) got the boot but for whatever reason his physical move could only happen once season was over.
As for Heskey, cant even remember when he went tbh. However, it has to be three or four years ago now seeing as id say hes had 1or2 years at Birmingham and 1or 2 years at wigan. So it could well have been a Benitez sale - I coudlnt say to be honest

What about including charges/loan fees/trf fees for Tevez in the united figures given you predict we`ll spend £20mill more :-D

Heskey announced his move the day before the last game of the season and what was in effect Houllier`s last game (I remember because it was a quite a strange thing as it was totally out of the blue).

I`m not criticising no listing BTW, I just trying to explain where the differences were from, as all the figures I`ve seen seem reasonable enough from memory but there is always going to be some disputes about some of the figures, although I`d say it shouldn`t have any significant effect on the outcome.

I agree Cisse probably shouldn`t be included but I only realised when I had a quick scan after you questioned my figures.

Hahaha, you must be kidding me. Liverpool have been rebuilding forever. You can`t keep using that excuse. All teams rebuild, but only when (in my opinion) when the majority of the team is broken up. It`s not the same as spending a fortune on gash players and then getting rid of them on the quiet over the next couple of years.

Errr which is what Rafa has had to do over the last few years following what was left to him in the aftermatch of the Idiot Houllier`s reign is my point. I very very very rarely use the phrse "re-building" but sadly it is effectively what Benitez has had to try and do since he came in

This wasn`t my original point, but he hasn`t done a very good job as in both trophies he`s won, the teams consisted nearly entirely of Houllier players :p ;)

Champions League line up: Liverpool: Dudek, Finnan (Hamann 46), Traore, Hyypia, Carragher, Riise, Gerrard, Luis Garcia, Alonso, Kewell (Smicer 23), Baros (Cisse 85).
Subs Not Used: Carson, Josemi, Nunez, Biscan.

FA Cup final line up: Liverpool: Reina, Finnan, Carragher, Hyypia, Riise, Gerrard, Alonso (Kromkamp 67), Sissoko, Kewell (Morientes 48), Cisse, Crouch (Hamann 71).
Subs Not Used: Dudek, Traore.

1) Liverpool didnt have the money to change that many players so quickly. Benitex had t use some of them or we couldnt field a team

Of those players you;ve listed in black (ie Houllier players) Dudek - Gone, Hamman - Gone, Traore - Gone, Biscan - Gone, Baros - Gone, Cisse - Gone, Smicer - Gone

Of those remaining well I wouldnt sell Gerrard or Carra ever, Hyppia was awesome the only reason i would see him go now is his age has caught up on him a little, Kewell has been injured so he couldnt get rid of him anyways, Finnan probably would have gone had we had more dosh but he has impressed Benitez hence why he stuck with him and Riise i`d keep aswell for his veratility down the left

2) The 1st team players he kept from Houllier`s era arent bad but Houllier`s squad below the first team contained some utter garbage.

God they`ve been talking about Fergie re-building for the last few years seeing as theyve won nothing and look at the players they had there, the same goes for Wenger at Arsenal. One reference from me and im talking bull :-D

For the record "re-building" was probably the wrong term, maybe "moulding his own team" as a better phrase.
Personally I believe every manager at every club should be continually "re-building" to some extent because i think you need to be pretty short sighted if you suddenly find the situation where you have three, four, five players all coming to the age of 33 and on the way out and you`ve not already got replacements there learning how the team works and getting a few games to help break them in
