ASDA DVD Recorders under £120 - make that £100

Mark Oates (Reviewer) posted this on Friday, 22nd April 2005, 20:10

They`ve dropped the 4KUS DVDR230 down to £119.97, and have introduced the CyberHome CH-DVR 750 (which includes a NICAM decoder and is readily firmware uprgradeable) for the same price.

UPDATE: Took my faulty Cyberhome back and picked out a replacement machine and when they checked the bar code it was £99.96! As barring faults it appears a stonking machine, may I permit myself a woo-hoo?

The Cyberhome is probably the better of the two, but there doesn`t appear to be a region hack available for it? Anybody know if the Cyberhome passes through the signal from a Freeview box (through SCART) regardless of whether it is recording an analogue channel? I tried the Relisys recorder once, but as soon as you start recording an analogue channel it blocks the signal on the SCART in socket.

Chances are there is one available, though none that I can see here as yet, this recorder is on-sale for £129.99 at WHS & they sometimes have a info hack sheet for DVD players that they sell.

I quite like the Helpdesk people in a benevolent (as opposed to malevolent) way as they do some valuable work in preventing us being inundated by every halfwit who can work a phone.

Does anyone know if the Cyberhome from WHS records off-air in stereo (Nicam)?" target="_blank">WHS record off-air in stereo (Nicam)?

Yep, that`s the same machine as ASDA have for £120. It records NICAM. Word of warning - I bought one and it went titsup within a couple of days. Every time I pressed the MONITOR button to go to the recording mode, it went into standby. Finally I did a reset (power on while holding standby button on machine) and it passed away in front of my very eyes. Taking it back to ASDA on the `morrow.

Thanks for the warning. I think I will pass on this one.
Good luck with returning it.

Does it have component output? Progressive scan?
Any other details you can give us?

Thanks
