Well this was a complete dud. I don't think I've ever been so disappointed in a series. Such a waste of potential with that setting and cast.

Almost every character was a complete moron. Most of the detective work was done off-screen by the one competent character, whose wife somehow cannot fathom that he might have to work late given the insane mass murder case that just landed on his desk.

Seemed like the writers cared more about the indigenous people than the actual detective story, which would have been great if the show's entry point into their perspective wasn't the most annoying character in television history. Good Lord, Leah was just insufferable.

The final episode tried so hard to tie up all the loose ends with one horrible contrivance after another, not always successfully either. The throw-away explanation for the mass deer suicide was especially unconvincing. Some things they didn't even bother to explain.

Laughed out loud when it turned out...

SPOILER:
it was the cleaning ladies

So dumb.

Not a patch on seasons 1 and 3.

I really enjoyed it especially the ending but nowadays im not as discerning with scripts the only thing that grated me a bit was the spooky nonsense

I thought they got the balance quite well with that in the end.
Still left enough of it hanging for people to dismiss it or accept it.

As you say though bloody good series but then with Jodie Foster I'd expect no less.
Certainly got to where I was champing at the bit for the last episode to drop.

Overall I thought it was 'OK' but could and should have been soooo much better.
It started to remind me of Lost mid way through where I was starting to think they've introduced so much and so many questions the finale is gonna be amazing but in the end they just didn't bother for most of the things they brought up.
eg...
the whole supernatural thing - why?  Danvers didn't believe any of it but sometimes seemed to see/sense things but it was all brushed aside and not explained.
'She's awake....' - what was that all about - and his 'fit'?
the tongue - erm, what and why?
link to S1 - Travis was Rust's dad, spirals etc. - why bother adding any of that and doing zero with it?
so, SPOILER:
other than the cleaners did it - and wow, how they all managed to keep a secret for so many years!
, how did they actually die - specifically thinking of being terrified before they died - the vet etc.?
the way they somehow found the caves so quickly unaided that then happened to be pretty much directly underneath the Research Station... it was so easy to find you need to wonder the point of the Heiss character and why he needed to be killed?  Also, what was the point of the other guy they went to visit in the little settlement?

Ultimately, I think it was just OK, as above, but tagged on the 'True Detective' badge to get those viewing figures up!

I think they left as much as needed.
A very close society with it's own take on religion and old stories woven in to it. This can rub off on outsiders when they are in it 24/7 and I think the permanent night contributed to that big time.
Enough of a resolution with enough left unsaid that we can argue it ever after.

As for hanging True Detective on it just to boost figures.
I have only seen this and series one but they seem well connected with a deep relationship between two main characters, both police.

The more I think about it the more I think how they wasted precious time on crap (the Russian bride served what purpose?) that could have been so much better spent explaining other things - like tongues on the floor, SPOILER:
killer cleaners
, fits, voices and ghosts.  Or leaving them out altogether.

Previous True Detective series had strong detective leads certainly and there have been many other shows with a similar premise.  This certainly had two great leads too.
I just felt this thought it had that premise so crowbar a few links and Easter eggs in to justify the name.
It probably would have actually got more leeway had it just been a 6 part thriller cop series, unlinked to what had gone previously.
Still, stories are stories....

‘True Detective’ Renewed For Season 5 At HBO As Showrunner Issa López Strikes Overall Deal

Quote:
True Detective is coming back for a fifth season at HBO.
Issa López, who served as showrunner for True Detective: Night Country, the fourth and most successful iteration of the crime franchise, will oversee the next installment as part of an overall deal she signed with the network.
It’s yet to be decided as to whether season five of True Detective will be related to Night Country or will be an entirely new story.

Hopefully this season will have some detectives in it.
