LoveFilm - Utterly Abysmal - Decent DVD Rental Company Reccomendations

Ronof9 (Mostly Harmless) posted this on Saturday, 12th November 2005, 19:22

Having endured months of abysmal levels of service from Lovefilm -
I was mistakely under the misaprehansion I would receive DVD`s for the money they received
I would like recommendations for a decent DVD rental company - preferably one who actually sends you some discs.
Thankyou

I`ve subscribed to Lovefilm, Screenselect, and Blockbuster in the past.

Screenselect was the best by a mile! Quick turnaround and good customer service imo.

Wait! We can`t stop here! This is bat country!

It`s a toss up between Blockbuster and ScreenSelect in my experience; Blockbuster seem to have a marginally quicker turnaround but ScreenSelect have a bigger range and have yet to send me a duff disc. One of the plus` for Blockbuster is that they send out double disc (e.g. Red Dwarf, Drop the Dead Donkey) sets as one selection whereas ScreenSelect class them as two. Try a month with each and see what you think.

Yep, ScreenSelect.

I`m surprised to hear good things about Blockbuster.
Might give them a go sometime.

I too can recommend ScreenSelect. Having been with LoveFilm for nearly a year (4-disc package), I received an offer, acknowledging that I might benefit from having more films at a time at my disposal, and making me an exclusive offer of eight films at a time for £39.99. I find it more than a coincidence that, just a few days after not accepting this offer, my Lovefilm status was devalued and my account was assigned a lower mailing priority. I declined the offer and - surprise surprise - I suddenly encountered their fair use policy.

Despite having returned all 4 films, only one was dispatched, with no further discs scheduled for dispatch. Upon further enquiry (via telephone) I was advised that, in order to provide a balanced experience for all customers and due to my high use of the service, I had been assigned a lower mailing priority and that I could now expect a far lower turnaround time, i.e. the next discs were not expected to be dispatched for another three days! Looking back over my history, I found had borrowed an average of 2.5 films per week over a year. This, LoveFilm suddenly determined high use - surely more than a coincidence that this came immediately following my turning down their special offer. A balanced experience for members, surely, should be the responsibility of members themselves. In the interests of fairness, it would be more rational and honourable for LoveFilm to suggest to members who do not rent high numbers of discs to perhaps reduce their subscription level.

The telephone operator at the time of my enquiry was quick to point out that I was not being penalized, though I truly cannot see it any other way, nor could I find a better way of describing the situation. The bottom line is: I was being penalized for my level of use of the service. It is logical to suggest that - if anybody - customers who rent lower numbers of discs are those that should be penalized under LoveFilm`s fair use policy. If someone is renting a low number of discs, they are then monopolising these discs for longer periods of time, effectively preventing your other members from renting them. Members with a higher turnover keep the discs for shorter periods of time, thus making them available quickly and more readily for other customers.

While one of Lovefilm's selling points at the time I joined was there being no limit to the number of discs one could rent in a month, that particular hook is one that is clearly re-evaluated once a member's custom has been secured.

All in all, this experience soured an otherwise satisfactory relationship with LoveFilm. I cancelled my membership on the spot and would rather join Blockbuster than ever use LoveFilm again. Anyone in a similar situation is advised to head straight to ScreenSelect.

blockbuster are so far the best, but we just left them to go to screenselect as they had more "gay interest" films then blockbuster, (who we`ll go back to when they send the comeback to us offer like they did last time)

and there RUBBISH!!! our list is now just under 150 (some real rubbish but wanted to build a list) and last week we got a total of 2 films!!! on a 3 film package they would send 1 film and then have "awaiting allocation" against the other 2 when that one was recieved then we got 1 more, sent that back, and had nothing since wednesday, at the weekend we went down to 2 dvd package today they still havnt sent anything out.

were also with love film, who sent us a 3 month for the price of one offer, so far we`ve had top titles, and had 8 in two weeks,

so just try each one for the free trial (there are 30day trial is you search instead of there 5 film/14day trial offers) then leave them, move on and wait for the email offering you a bribe to go back to them, go back to them use there bribe, and leave, they`ll just keep bribeing you.

just realized this post was last used last year, but it was top of the list today??

Screenselect are the best I`ve experienced. During my one month membership to Blockbusters I recieved two discs. Hence my cancellation and utter dismay at their service.

I`d reccomend screen select. I`ve been with them for a whiel and have experienced very good customer service and a great number of movies (not to mention games) available. Sign up for a month and give them a go

Having read about the problems with Lovefilms, I signed up for the free 3 week trial intending to cancel at the end. Over the 3 weeks their service was pretty good I got about 16 discs.

I rang to cancel and was offered 3 months for the price of 1 month & based on my experience with the trial I accepted the offer. Big Mistake

Since taking the money from my credit card 9 days ago for the 3 disc unlimted account they haven`t sent me a single DVD. Zero, zilch, nada.

All my trials disc are shown as returned, I have over 30 DVD on my list yet not one single disc has been selected to be posted out. Nine days and they haven`t managed to send one disc from my list.

I`ve emailed them and they say there are technical problems with the auto dispatch system and have frozen billing my account till discs are sent out. I don`t believe them, they should be putting a message on their website to let customer know if there is a computer problem causing delays.

Definitely be cancelling once the three months is up and will not be dealing with them again.
