The alias Season 3 R2 DVDS on Ebay - dodgy or no?

TinnionA (Elite) posted this on Wednesday, 6th April 2005, 22:00

They claim to be an asian release, I`m just wondering a)whether they`re pirates and b) if they have english subtitles.

edit:discovered yesasia and apparently it is a legitimate release and does have english subtitles. Still a question over the ebayers themselves(boxes seem to be different.)

Guess the only thing to do now is find where they got it so cheap from.

I`ve bought legitimate Region 6 DVD box sets before with no bother - cheap, Chinese subtitles (turn-offable) by default, English 5.1 soundtrack.

Mind you, just went to check out my usual supplier and he seems to have had his account closed down....

anything that says "asian collectors edition" is 99% likely to be a bootleg, usually supplied on a dvd 5 (examples from ebay of items i`ve bought myself, queer as folk seasons 1/2/3 taken 10 disc edition x-files seasons 1/2/3/4/5 monk season 1/2 ds9 season 1) most of the time all the stuff from the official editions makes it onto the asian release, BUT there are almost allways compresion artifacts & they are often worse than if you used dvd shrink on the original dvd 9 release :/ (x-files is a case in point, the picture quality on my season 1/2 is awfull, i`m eventually gonna replace em with the r2 originals) on the other side of the coin is the taken 10 disc asian collectors boxset, only 1 episode per disc but the picture & sound quality seems better than the r2 6 disc version, it even has DTS & 5.1 :/

i`m not saying all asian stuff is dodgy, but 99% of the dvd stuff of ebay IS but they are often just as good as the "proper" releases But, you pays you`re money & takes you`re chances.

Well both of those are obviously bootlegs, but TBH I was going to wait for season 4 to finish before I bought it.

I was thinking more of cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=41589&item=6383708787&rd=1
for example.

a couple of things make go hmm, first off, the discs are aparently region 0 WILL PLAY ON ALL MACHINES AND CONSOLES & REGION 2 COMPATIBLE + the fact that the box/artwork is identical to all the other bootleg copies on ebay (tho it is also the same pic thats used on the R1 & R2 release) don`t get me wrong tho, if it`s a substantially better price theres no reason not to go for it :) but personaly, i`m almost certain it`s a bootleg. one thing i`d definately ask the seller is weather or not they are dvd 9`s (if he say`s they are dvd 5`s then they are deffo pirate copies with a high compresion ratio)

The picture appears to be the R1 season 3 set. There is no R2 set.It could be the Australian R4 set. Many R4 releases are coded for R2 aswell.
Safest bet is to get a R1 set brand new from Movietyme.Only £29.99,no customs charges,no worries

I don`t want to have region 1 DVDs, apart from anything my Computer won`t let me do multi-region.

I`m just gonna wait a year and it`ll be £20 from amazon. I was just interested.

With Alias proving to be a complete flop in the UK(god knows why)the likelihood of any more UK Alias dvd`s is getting slimmer.
You can download programs for about £16 that will enable your computer to play any region discs

Hmm, lets think why. Gets shunted round on terrestial to graveyard slots like 1 in the morning - its put on Bravo for digital viewers. No-one ever has a chance to watch it(I`ve missed loads of season 3 on channel 5 because I didn`t know it was on).

We`re still due to get season 3 mind(may 30th) - but I`m going to wait for the price drop.

As for season 4, I`m going to pick that up when the season has finished in america from ebay(as opposed to buying it now with only 13/14 episodes)
