Richer Sounds won`t honour prices in latest What Hi-Fi advert

mikeyb (Elite) posted this on Thursday, 6th February 2003, 15:26

After seeing the advert in the Feb Issue of What Hi-Fi I decided to try and buy 1 or 2 items..

Was told that they were only on offer to In Store Callers anyway, funny I thought especially as this is defintiely not stated in any of the 10 pages in the advert.

It even lists the mail order telephone number as well, the other strange thing is that the advert states at the bottom of 5 out of the 10 pages that these offers are only available to readers of What Hi-Fi magazine !!

And that you had to mention the ad to be able to buy at those prices.

Spoke to 2 different people on the phone and both said same ......ME NO HAPPY !!

They have item in stock at warehouse but not in my nearest 2 stores, they want £80 for same item by mail order when it clearly states £60 in advert?

So don`t bother phoning the 08700 number you can`t get those prices in advert anyway

:-(

I also had the same experience with Richer Sounds. They`ll only honour the price if you can show them the issue of the magazine. Also, it`s always worth phoning first as they often don`t have any stock of the special offers even though they seem to have been advertising it in the most recent issue of the magazine. Don`t forgot you end up paying another £10 delivery charge if ordered on the web. Richer`s do have good deals on sometimes but its a bit of pain to get them.

Think yourself lucky - if you`d bought it and had a problem they take ages to fix it. I needed a new keypad for a universal remote as the numbers rubbed off. They insisted I contact the manufacturer ( only 6 months old) to fix it despite it being their legal responsibility. It took 6 weeks and they stated that they wouldn`t consider a wait for up to 6 months to be unacceptable.

My advice - leave Richer Sounds alone - they rarely have what they advertise and have very poor normal warranty back up (i.e. in the first 12 months.

I`ve never had a problem with them - always good service and normally exeptional after-sales service - will continue to use them..........

I`m with Neiliboy, I`ve NEVER had any problems at all , in fact when I bought my dvd player from them it was from a similar ad in what hi-fi, they didn`t have the advertised item in stock so they substituted it for a newer model at the old model price!

One thing I don`t like about them is the way they try to sell you the "unbranded" DVD players. They`re clearly on commission and slate the branded players to high heavens when everyone else gives them praise.

You`d think they would be at least a little more subtle with it! Saying that, we got our last player from there and it was a good deal cheaper than other local shops.

If you have a problem with an advert in a magazine or paper (i.e. prices not being honoured or dodgy service) get in touch with the publication. I read somewhere that they do have some sort of responsibility, but it may be worth checking with trading standards first.

My experience with Richers sounds has generally been positive but their best deals can be very hard to find in stock. Best way to shop there is to actually keep going into the store every few weeks and hope you "get lucky".

Also, you have to know exactly what you want before going into the store because the sales guys there are biased to certain brands (JPW speakers, etc.).

I recently bought a ALCHEMIST DVS-600 dvd surround and player from them and was actually a bit miffed.
I do like the system but the sales guy was lacking any knowledge of the product. When asked if they had any complete systems that played SVCD he said no,and the only way to do it was to buy from them a stand-alone player and then the sub and speakers totalling £450.
The ALCHEMIST cost £300,plays DVD-R, SVCD,has a tuner(i was told it didn`t) and is also DTS. He also told me that this company was bigger than SONY but who`s too say he`s wrong?

From reading assorted threads, and experience at my local branch It seems that Richer Sounds branches and Richer Sounds web/mail order are two completely different companies.

I have always had good service in store at Bristol, though was surprised by a sign saying certain advertised personal hi-fi items were not available in the store. It turns out the mail order business kept undercutting them to get the business! Weird.
