Page 1 of Problems with Dvd burner ..............help please !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I have a LG HL-DT-STDVDRAM GSA-4163B drive which has been no problem until last night.
When i insert a blank dvd it shows as cd drive (in my computer)but when i remove the blank disc it shows dvdram drive again,i tried a dvd movie in the drive and it recognized it no problem.
So i thought i would try to burn a dvd with dive using nero 6,everything went fine until the point of burning and then i was given an error message telling me that the drive was in use unable to burn.
I`ve used nero tools and it reports back that the drive is fine,i don`t know what else to try any suggestions ?.

Are you sure that the disc has not been used before?Or try another of the same type then another other brand? Did it work fine ?
I think the drive is ok just a disc problem.
I have had simular when trying a dvd rw that has had a failed video record done on it and once wiped Fully it works fine again.
You also say you are using nero 6 ,are you using all the latest updates?See the nero website. [ long download ]

Make sure you haven`t got Desktop CD recording on.

1) Open up windows explorer
2) Right click your burner and choose properties
3) Go to Recording tab
4) Uncheck "Enable CD recording on this drive"

Tried all the above (thanks guys) and reinstalled nero,started process again encoding fine but when it gets to burning to disc i get the error message "unable to start burning as drive is use" BUT IT`S NOT BEING USED !!!!!!!!!!!!! >:( >:( >:( >:(

Any other other suggestions ?.

I haven`t got an answer for you, but I have the same error message as you.

I have a Lite on dvd drive in my pc. I use Ulead`s DVD Movie Factory to burn my home movies. After all the encoding and menu building the burn should then happen but I then get the same error message as you.

Now I have tried re installing ulead but still get error message. Even after re booting the pc and going straight into Ulead DVD Movie Factory and not opeing any other programs I still get the in use error message. >:(

Please help us.

I had a very similar problem, my dvd/cdrw drive was only showing up as a cd rom, or it would show up as a cdrw but when you put a blank disk in you would get incompatible drive error or similar.

After a lot of swearing and head scratching I worked out the problem was Roxio, un-installed roxio and it has worked fine ever since.

Try the bit resetter in nero / or check that it is correct as that can have the effect of changing the drive to a cd-rom instead of dvd burner?
Other software call bit resetter [ book type ] usually you can change it back no problems either way.

Superteds suggestion is worth looking into. Do you have realplayer or any other media player running in your system tray as it might be worth sutting them down and trying again or going into their options and looking for burner plugins such as roxio and disabling them. I get the in use warning if i don`t shut down the windows what should i do with this disc window that pops up (try right clicking on the burner in my computer and select properties/autoplay/blankcd and see if its set to use a particuolar program as a result of installing some software)

I worked out it was Roxio as tried all sorts to correct the problem but nothing worked.

In the end I bought a new drive for my laptop and got a DVDRW as a replacement, put it in and had exactly the same fault.

Couldn`t think of what else to do so did a re-format, after that drive worked perfectly, unfortunalty I`d already binned the DVD/CDRW drive.

Installed all my software over the next week or 2 just as I was needing it and one day realised the drive was playing up again.

The last program I had installed was Roxio 8, un-installed it and the drive starts working again.

Have gone off Roxio now, find that it trys to get in everwhere, when I copy MP3`s over to my phone you get an error message saying the Roxio file attatchements cannot be copied, what attatchements?
