HELP WITH NETWORKING

MADTheOgster (Elite Donator) posted this on Friday, 30th January 2004, 23:00

hi, i`m building a new pc for my 5year old son tommorow and want to share my ntl 1meg connection, can simply add another network card into my pc and directly connect it to the new pc, my thinking is that when i install xp onto his pc it would automaticly find the connection, like when i set up up my pc direct to the modem.

i know this is a simplistic veiw and may be wrong, i have networked multiple pc`s together in the past using win 98/me but have never tried to share a connection before.

thanks in advance

better off getting a router cost me £45 linksys you can do it with just network cards but pc gateway needs to be open i think so you can access the net ie (both pcs need to be on) :/ i have 2 pcs and 2 xboxes connected to my router on 1mb ntl runs a dream

if you are just linking 2 pcs together
you can justt add a network card into your pc
and buy a cross over network cable to connect to a network card in the 2nd pc
unless you are thinking of getting a third pc in the future
this is the cheapest option
(but you will need to ALWAYS turn on the first pc)

cokie enjoy

I`m going to repeat Micky`s suggestion! Get a router and save yourself the hassle mate! Ebuyer do one for under £40 inc VAT

as per Micky & Julesbloke....go the way of the router, you will soon get
p*$$3d off with having to power up 2 pc`s just so the other can access the net.

Been there, done it, got the badge & the t-shirt.

Plus, seeing as routers are fairly inexpensive nowadays, there`s always
the option of connecting your Xbox / PS2 if required.

I`d agree with that. putting on two P.C`s just to use the internet on one is a right old pain in the arse.

And once you have he router, the world of home networking is your lobster. I use my big daddy p.c as a media server to a tiny shuttle in my living room that powers my entertainment area. And the benefits of being able to use my laptop on the khazi are unreal!

Once youve got the bug you`ll try to network everything!

my pc is on 24/7 so powering up is not an issue as long as my son`s pc can acces the internet through mine, bearing in mind my son is only 5 and his only interest is playing the flash games on cbeebies :D

Are they on the same IP subnet?

Same workgroup?
