Noisy Wharfedale 750S - do I have a problem.

Two days I purchased a Wharfedale 750S DVD player at Tesco and bought The Matrix and Pulp Fiction to try it out. The machine is fine except for one problem. When playing The Matrix there is a high-pitched mechanical whine from the player (the drive?) which seems to lessen 10 minutes into the film and gradually disappears. The noise is distracting, even when the soundtrack is at a moderate volume level on the TV.

With the Pulp Fiction DVD the noise is less but still there. When playing CDs the unit is completely silent with no background noise. I have 3 CD players at home and expect there to be no mechanical noise when playing CDs. I would have had the same expectation for DVD players & discs. As this is my first experience of DVD I don`t know if I have a problem with the player or the DVDs. Any helpful souls out there that can advise me what the problem is? Thanks ... Bren

Hi Bren,

There have been several threads on this and other forums regarding some drive noise during spinning up of a disk and sometimes whilst playing a disk, but I`ve never heard anyone describe a high pitched whine.

Therefore this could be a mechanical fault as opposed to a normal noisy startup.

My 750S is a little noisy on startup but once the film is going it appears to be quiet, I say appears to be because I generally have my amp turned up to ornament and window shattering levels so can`t hear the drive :-)

If its as bad as you say and its a high pitched sound I`d err on the side of caution and get it replaced.

Cheers

Chris

My wharfy does the same. I`ve had, in the space of a month and a half, two micos and two wharfies. The Mico made a sound like a hoover so they went back and first wharfy had s***e pic quality so i got a new one. There is quite alot of noise when I play my Scream 3, Saving Private Ryan and Arlington Road disc. All the others are fine though. I think its just a prob with the disc. Only solution is to whack up the volume or put it in a cabinet.

I`m afraid all Wharfedales even the older 750`s suffer from the noisy Sanyo drive mechanism, you`ll just have to live with it, or put it in a cabinet with a glass door, that`s what fixed mine! The Aiwa 370(Comet) is silent when playing films, and has a very good picture, but has a slow layer change, worth a consideration if you can get a refund at Tescos.

Swings and roundabouts spring to mind!

HI Bren
Just brought mine this week a 750s my drive also makes a noise I`ve just loaded an MP3 in it and while it was loading it sounded like a load of bugies inside the drive [ am i being to critical ] but it played the disc O.K.
Reference your high pitch noise I don`t get that with the matrix [R1], but it was like the MP3 At the start then just a slight noise of the bugies going at it while the movie played. But have no problems with any dvd so far played terminator 2 [r1] no problems.
CD`s as you said are dead quiet I think the whafdale boffins should tell why this is happening
I would take it back and swap it for another or go for an eclispe from Richer sounds £20 cheaper and has the works my mate says the is no noise from the drive? I`m thinking about it.

Come on DVD Reviewer sought out the mystery Wharfdales 750, 750s etc. i.e. the difference/ which one is better than the other, are all the drives noisy
K.J.
