DVD / HDD combi

flyingmonkey (Elite) posted this on Saturday, 15th July 2006, 09:40

Hi

I really don`t know where to start when looking for one of these. It needs to be multi-region and have a decent set of outputs. We are getting a HDTV but I am not sure if a HD DVD is absolutely necessary. We have cable so it doesn`t need to be Freeview.

Do HDD recorders use Videoplus+ or do you have to set them to manually record?

As for budget...don`t want to go daft but I do want a decent one.

Thanks

Nick

I`ve got a Panasonic DMREH50 HD DVD recorder which I love. it`s not HD as in Hi Def, hd as in hard drive. i think they`re around £250 at Richer Soudns now.

my gf`s sister got a Saumsung recently £170 from Play, she is happy with that.

I think only hi def recorders you can get are part of your sky/telewest hi def box.

As for video plus, yes and no.

I have NTL, not sure if Telewest is different.

If I want to record Sky one tonight, whatever is on at 8:00 - 9:00, I type in that number which is in the tv guide, and I`ve set that channel to be AV2, which is the scart socket the NTL box is plugged into. I then have to make sure teh box is set to 30 for sky, or I`ve set the diary to do it. The recorder can`t set the cable box to change channel.

videoplus on 1, 2, ITV, 4 work as they did on VCR, i.e. thorugh tv aerial so they work properly.

I think that answers your questions.

Im :/ on which u want!

DVD/HDD Combi
Yep some HDD Recorders use video plus :D and some dont :(
My video was on its last legs so I got one from here! http://www.dvdplayers.co.uk/php/showcategory.php?cid=14 It had to be multi region in case my other dvd player breaks I wont be able to play my region 1 dvds :D

I dont think getting one will make that much difference on a HDTV! The recordings look better than my old video player and I can now record upto 171 hours of TV on it although I think im using the standard setting for 36 hours at moment which is more than enough for me!

HD DVD
I didnt think HD Dvd Players were out yet in Uk. :/

But this is what u will want in the future to get better looking pictures on your HDTV!
I havnt seen one but these will only play either the HD DVD discs or the Blu-ray discs and as there r 2 formats ull need 2 machines!
Ill be waiting till they decide on one format or machines play both types of discs! Oh and maybe a HD DVD Recorder too >:(

Thanks guys.

I like the look of this JVC one but I don`t think it can be made multi-region and it`s about £400.

Cheers

Hi there

I have had a few hard disk drive recorders and the best one I have had so far is the Philips DVDR3300H which can be made multi region. But I am now about to get the Philips DVDR7250H which can also be made multi region, it has freeview, can record dolby digital 5.1 surround sound and can record on all formats of disk DVD +_ R/RW and DVD + DL disks and it has 160GB disk drive.

Also you can buy this from Empire Direct for £292.99 in the sale at the moment.

Hope this helps.

Jackie
