If a TV has integrated Freeview can I record from it?

gezvader (Mostly Harmless) posted this on Sunday, 4th September 2005, 17:15

This may sound like a daft question but -

If a tv has integrated Freeview can I record from it onto the video ?
In other words - does the Digital tuner in the TV have an "OUT" ?

You see I`m thinking of buying a panasonic tv - TX28 PN1 - for £299 , but for another £50 I can buy one with Freeview integrated in it .

btw - do these tvs have both analog and digital tuners?

If the TV can output its signal from one of its scarts then yes.......-most TV`s will allow this.
I think all integrated TV`s have an analogue tuner too.

I have a Sony IDTV and can output the Freeview program via AV3 (Scart). But you have to record what is on the screen and the TV must be switched on (I think , this is not a facility I have used much as I do most of my recording from Sky).
Also , it does have digital and analog tuners.
Not sure if this is all the same on all integrated TVs (but it probably is).

The old dear has a Panasonic integrated TV and you can definately record Freeview channels from it (providing you get all the cables set up right)

You don`t have to have the TV actually switched on, but Freeview has be on & tuned to the right channel (but there`s a "program" facility to do this)

Merriman,

do you think it`s a good tv ?
And does it have both analog and digital tuners?

I`ve heard that panasonic tvs are very good .

I`ve a TX28DTX1(the predecessor to DTM1 series) and yes it has both analogue and digital tuners, you can choose which signal you want to output from the scart and just program the Tv if you intend to record a digital channel whilst you are not watching the tv. Can`t fault the TV personally

I guess it depends on the model, but I have a Panasonic & so does my mum & the picture quality is very good on both.

Yes, the TV does have analogue & digital capability.

I`ve got a Sony idTV and it`s great. Yes you can record from the digital tuner. As has been said, you can select what you want to send through AV3 - digital tuner or analogue tuner. In fact you can even select AV4 (the front connections) to be sent through AV3 which makes watching and recording video camera footage easy with the camera connected through the front of the TV.
To record digital, the TV doesn`t have to be switched on but it does have to be in standby. (1W power usage)
If you scan through the TV guide to a future programme and select it, you are asked if you want to switch over to this channel at the selected time or if you want to record it. Selecting the latter and it starts your video at the right time for you without even touching it :-)
