One final question abot the panasonic DVD recorder

logic (Mostly Harmless) posted this on Friday, 24th September 2004, 18:17

Thanks to all for answers my other queries. I have just one more. If i record a film i only want to watch once. I suppose i would record it on a DVD Ram disk. But if someone wanted to borrow it to play on a standalone DVD (not a recorder). How would i get round this, without wasting a DVD-r. So my question is can i record to any other type of DVD RW`s except RAM. Thanks again peps

Others may or not bear me out, but I think you can only play RAM discs on one of the later stand alone Panasonic DVD players. That is the biggest drawback with RAM.

edit: Sorry didn`t read your post properly, you already seem to know about RAM. Dunno about minus RW, but you definitely can`t use plus RW in a Panny recorder.

You can only record to DVD-RAM & DVD-R. All my friends have DVD-RAM so that`s no problem to me however you can run it through tha computer via TMPenc author, it doesn`t take long, & turn it into a TS file that can be burnt to -+R or -+ R/W. The DVD-RAM advantage is too great to sacrifice for a DVD/RW recorder just to lend to friends that don`t have the latest technology.

But as we all know,RAM has no advantages over -RW and all machines bar those from Panasonic now realise that and supply machines with -RW and RAM,so those with the latest technology don`t have any problems, only those with Panasonic machines

yeah, the main drawback is the inability for most to "share" ram disc`s and whilst ram is a superb format (no arguing please :D ) rw is FAR more compatable, tho tbh when you can get dvd-r`s for 17p each, (a decent blank vhs will cost 75p-£1) why worry about wasting them ? for general tv recording`s use 4hr mode so they last a while & if you wanna share -r is far more compatable than -rw on most players anyway. i should also say that the panny machines are "generally" extremely reliable, mines done well over 1000 disc`s (probably over double that) without a hitch. :)

hope this helps

EDIT=i should mention that i still use ram whenever i`m watching tv, very handy for pausing live tv, skipping the adverts etc etc, tho i`ll probably stop using ram if i get SKY+ (providing A..someone talks me into buying it. B..& i can get it bought & installed for no more than £99)

The reason the DVD-R/W makers don`t put on DVD-RAM is they have to pay a licence to Panasonic & are two tight to, so give you prior technology to RAM...THUS Making DVD-RAM the latest technology. It is also capable of lasting many times longer than R/W & can contain more data so making it more reliable & better final quality. I have yet to have a faulty DVD-RAM disc (also all my friends) but the amount of R/W discs I`v had to throw away (both minus & plus) is over 20. This tells me a lot on it`s own.

yeah, i have similar probs with -rw`s and stopped using them in the pc for this reason, and whilst i only have the 2 ram discs that came with the machine (nearly 2 years ago :o ) neither have had ANY probs despite being used frequently, tho i still think ram will go the way of beta-max, Unless it gets the 3rd party suport it deserves it`s doomed to obscurity :(

Paull, keep up.Your statement is tosh.Panasonic are just about the only RAM machine not to carry -RW.Apart from Panasonic, all those who were formally relying on RAM for rewritables are now adding -RW for compatibility.Panasonic are now behind in that their machines are virtually the last with compatibility problems. It seems its Panny who are too tight to pay something to add -RW.Why would companies want to pay for RAM,when -RW,in its VR and Video mode does all that RAM does-and more.
Its also unwise for a Panny owner to mention 17p blanks.Even if your machine is reliable, the one thing that crops up almost as often as Philips problems is the Panny dislike of cheap blanks

sorry, but thats wrong.

when 4x media first came out some brands where incompatable with the panny, but those same discs where riddled with faults & batch problems, these where sorted in the early day`s of dvd-r. and if my "old" DMR-E30 can handle over 200 of these 17p discs (data on printable) without 1 single problem then how can anyone say the machine dislikes cheap media ? and whilst i mostly agree with you in the RAM debate, ie. ram will die out, this is only because of A. compatability B. cost.
and has nothing to do with which is the better format, you can get dvd-rw`s &+rw`s for under £1 each + they are readily available whilst a decent RAM disc will cost around triple that price & more often than not will have to be sourced on the internet thus incurring postage costs as well.
