Lens Cleaner?

gingerone (Elite) posted this on Wednesday, 5th March 2003, 12:04

I`ve noticed that when using my dvd layer I get a vertical line about a third of the way across the screen which is especially noticeable on panning shots.
I did`nt used to have this and it is only on the dvd player and no other sources. Is It possible that the lense needs cleaning?
p.s. I`ve tried different scart leads and it is not the lead.

I`ve been looking at this one. Did you notice a difference in picture quality after using it?

Not too much but then Ive got a 42" W/S TV with 100Hz & inbuilt progressive scan on NTSC discs, however, all the discs that I had that jumped a bit due to the rugrats getting their paws on them played superbly after I cleaned my DVD player. I now use it regularly & have not had a single problem since

Hope this helps

Is the vertical line you are seeing sometimes dark, and from an RGB source at all Gingerone? As that is what I seem to get on my Philips 6006, but there are three bands, one far right, one left and one a third from the left.

They only seem to appear on backgrounds of similar colour (Harry Potter, the owl sitting on the street sign amongst the mist e.g.) and if the brightness is above 45. Doesn`t seem to happen on the s-video scart though, seems worse with the dvd player in RGB.

Since I noticed it, I can`t seem to..erm..not notice it!

Yes that`s what I`m getting, but only with the dvd player and it happens with RGB ,s-video and composite.
Great so it`s the flipping tv then! I`m begining to wish I`d never bought this tv.
Do you get an overly dark picture with rgb as well?

Fortunately, (if you can call it that), the RGB picture is actually brighter than my Hitachi 25" 4:3 tv. The thing is, possibly like yourself, I personally hate not being able to see detail in films with very dark scenes/backgrounds, my Grundig player tended to struggle.

So I bought a Samsung S224 which has a black level adjust, great picture and everything, but, now that I can see everything using the BL adjust it then shows up these pain in the a##e black bands!!

I would love this tv but for these vertical lines they ruin an otherwise fantastic RGB picture, it`s possibly the last Philips set I will ever buy!

My pioneer dv525 is struggling, although I`ve managed to get a picture that I am 90% happy with, it is still too dark. I will be getting a new player that has picture adjustments to sort it out.
Out of interest what have you set the settings to for the rgb on the tv? It has taken me six months of fiddling to get a picture I`m close to happy with.
I only see the middle line when directly in front of the tv although I can see the ones on the edge if I sit to one side.
