No, there is NO way to reset the internal counter, apart from sending your player to Philips. As far as I know, they`ll reset it for you free of charge, but this only gets you another 25 attempts to switch regions.

Reprogramming the eeprom in the player would resest the internal counter but hey .... just get it chipped or reprogrammed by a dealer ....

Philips are obliged to reset the region switch counter for free if you lock it to a foreign region, at least within the warranty period, because switching regions in this way does not invalidate the warranty terms. It is merely an "undocumented feature" of the player, and since it is a feature Philips themselves have added into their machines, you are perfectly within your rights to use it.
Also, if you DO have the machine chipped or reprogrammed, the warranty will only become void if any faults occur specifically because of this.

When we "chip" a philips machine to auto region we dont do any soldering or fit any additional chips ... the player is simply reprogrammed to auto region ... this is a feature of all philips machines and just needs to be activated ....

How do you re-program it? With the philips remote or a special one, or some other method?

I`m afraid I cannot give away this sensitive information ... it is not done with the philips remote and the hack changes the contents of the eeprom but this is all I can give away ....

"Solderless mods" are done by re-flashing the firmware. The new version of the firmware is a modified version of the original which has the region protection disabled. I`ve no idea where to get the firmware from though, or how the re-flash is done, so don`t ask! ;) AFAIK, the region-free firmware is usually only used for internal development and testing, but occasionally these firmwares are "liberated" by a dodgy employee...

of course this is true of some players but not the philips I`m afraid .... and with regard to where regionless firmware comes from it is often hacked versions of original firmware ,
