How long does a bank transfer take from Santander?

skirpy (Elite) posted this on Wednesday, 30th November 2011, 13:44

Hi,

I ordered an iPad 2 on black Friday there from the Apple store, i lost my debit card and had to pay with a bank transfer....it`s the first time i have done this.

My money left my account immediately but my Apple order status today says it`s still waiting for payment, i thought bank transfers were instant?

Cheers.

Santander won`t do "Faster Payments" until the end of the year (when they`ll be forced to)...so still at least 3 working days.
Also, you`re then waiting for Apple to process it through their systems.

I think you mean Easter.  iPads are engraved on the assembly line in China to order, so it has to catch the weekly DHL Yak out of Chengdu.

Apple always arse around about payments.  I wouldn`t sweat it.  If it takes too long to ship, make a fuss in writing to Apple and like me you might be able to wring a free stand/case out of them. ;)

That`s my story and like my underwear I`m sticking to it.

I would never deal with Sandander again, and remove my money.

I did that due to profilling of my account, which made it hopeless to trust I could get money out of their cash machine at any time. Imagine getting stuck somewhere away from home and dependant on a cash withdrawl.

Santandar now profile all withdrawn money from cash machine,  this means that a computer watches your account and understands what you draw out, when and where.

What happened to me was I needed £250, which I needed that day, but have never drawn out that sum in the past, only £100 or £200, so the cash machine refused to pay out even though £250 is an option on the buttons, as it thought it was not in my nature to withdraw that sum. It then froze my account and i could get no money.

I had to go Loydds to get a withdrawal instead.

This Santandar security has gone total crazy, with a dash of nuttiness thrown in.

I closed down my account the next day, after getting the reason that the bank is profilling, and can refuse withdraws. What sort of cash machine is that, that you cannot trust it will pay out.

The fact you made the payment on the Friday doesn`t help matters as a lot of the batch jobs that move money don`t run over the weekends making the average D+3 (D being payment day) timescale unlikely for your payment.

As Miles said the banks need to be fully compliant by 1st Jan 2012 for faster payments but a lot of them have already part enabled their sort codes for faster payments so Santander will be doing faster payments to a certain degree.  The sort code being the driving factor as to whether a payment will go via FPS or BACS.

To say your bank accepts them just fine but doesn`t send them is a bit unfair (or inacurrate) as its the responsibility of the sending bank on how the payment is sent and both the senders and recipients sort codes must be enabled.

So the sending and receiving banks have to allow faster payments is what you are saying? Or did I read that wrong? :/

No that`s pretty much it. If your personal/business bank account has been enabled and you try to make a payment it checks the recipients sort code and if it`s enabled it will go via faster payments else BACS.

Every week a file is sent out (industry sort code definition) to all the banks and this determines whether a sort code can receive inbound payments and if so which kind.

So if payments made from say NatWest to Santander use Faster Payments, but anything I make from Santander to anywhere else doesn`t, that`s the fault of Santander?
