Texting While Driving!! Gwent Police Campaign

dvdhouse (Competent) posted this on Saturday, 5th September 2009, 13:27

I have just been reading on SkyNews about an anti text while driving ad made by the Gwent Police in Wales is becoming popular in the US as it has been picked up by the networks over there. I hadnt seen it here till reading the article. People dont seem detered by points and a fine for using their phones at the wheel so maybe an ad like this will change their minds. While quite graphic it shows "what could happen" and is aimed at the younger driver..

****this is quite a hard hitting campaign made by the Gwent Police****

I`ve seen this before, and fully support the "in your face" reality of it. But after the crash it goes on too long, and just becomes like an episode of Casualty.

There should have been some hard-hitting statistics flashing up on the screen relating to how many accidents each year are as a result of someone using their phone. Then saying something like "Do you text while driving?" and one last screen saying "Don`t".

Something like that, to really get through to the turds that think they`re immortal.

lol it`s like a crap version of Final Destination 2

Anyway, yeah it goes on way too long. Should have ended with the girl screaming, then a big title saying "If you text while driving, we hope this happens to you"... or something.

Adverts do not work.

The only way you will not use your mobile phone in a car is to switch it off completly till you get out, thats what I do.

Anyway how do you stop this lot while driving, .....

the girls doing their lips in the car mirror
the white van man guzzling a can of pepsi and a big mack
the guy reading a road map on his lap
the woman gossiping to her passenger with her head not looking forward.

etc, etc etc.
its a nightmare out there :(

Add to that c*** bus drivers who think that they can change lanes without indicating even though you have nowhere to go. Yes I had a bad trip home last night.

I don`t get all the apparent worldwide fuss over this. Saw it the other day after reading various articles spouting about it`s amazing impact for a mere 10k production cost. I thought it was ordinary.

Im going to go against all the negative comments here and say I think its good.

Yes its a long `ad` but it is due to be shown in schools and colleges around the country soon so if it stops just one person texting at the wheel then its done its job. The fact it turns into a `episode of casualty` is so the watcher can realise the full impact one idiots behaviour can have, not just on people directly involved but on the wider scale. Ive lost count of the number of people who actually `ohh and ahhh` when a helicopter lands with us and can be heard saying `oh thought it only happened on the tele`

Just shown it to my son - he was shocked by it and says he thinks its a good idea for the younger generation (dont think he believes anyone over the age of 25 can really text whether they are driving or not ;) )

At the end of the day there will always be idiots on the road (Im willing to admit to being guilty of eating/drinking water at the wheel) so any ad has to be better than none.

No, it won`t. Ok, so maybe a minority will pay attention, but the vast majority of teen/younger drivers have such a misplaced faith in their driving skill that they think they`re more than capable of multi-tasking while at the wheel.

I know I was, then I grew up

I haven`t watched the advert, but if it is as graphic as has been suggested, I don`t want to see it on before the watershed.
