Trojan crap*

Gavski (Elite) posted this on Monday, 12th January 2009, 13:07

I need some help chaps.

On friday my computer seemed to contract a Trojan - the wondows warning flashed up and then promptly closed my programs down.

I turned it back on and did a system restore - but this failed.

My norton ran out a couple of months ago and I couldn`t afford to re-new.

I was able to get on to Firefox again and find out about the virus (a key logging one) and found a anti-virus that said it would get rid of it - it brought up 7 viruses once i installed it - but I needed to pay £50 to get rid of them!

So I went to PC World and bought Norton 09.
This installed after the computer playing up a few times inbetween - I ran the scan and it found 4 viruses (2 that were the name of this trojan) and said it had dealt with all viruses.

I restarted the computer.

Firefox worked again and I checked my email.
Then it all shut down again!!!

I re ran Norton and it said i was clear still...

But the windows po up comes up still saying it has the trojan!!
Argghhh!
Now the machine turns on but nothing will load up without crashing!
I don`t know what to do short of throwing it out a window.

I emailed our IT team at work (where I am writing from now) and asked if there was a fix...but no reply yet.

Is there a free program that will rid me of it? I think it is something like Win32.trojan.b or similar...

Thanks

AVG is free & has kept my computers virus free for years. There are other free ones as well.

I can`t access the internet from the laptop now - so can I download this set up to a disk and install it that way?
And will it rid me of it?

I can`t believe after paying for Norton it hasn`t got rid of it!

Yes (from http://free.grisoft.com)

How can we say if we have no idea what the trojan is?
Anyway, give AVG a go, its pretty good.

there is a good programme called `malware` or similar, it should get everything, then AVG will keep you clean.

Win32.zafi.B

Stick it in Google and see what comes back...

First link I got was from Bitdefender and they appear to have a removal tool....

Gavski...try Google for help on removing that specific trojan:

One of the results I found was this: webtoolsandtips.com/remove-worms/remove-win32zafib-how-to-uninstall-win32zafib-free/

I do not suggest that you download their software, they just have some suggestions about steps to remove it.

I`ll give you the same answer my computer building mate gives me.

Reformat.

Then install all the anti virus and firewall stuff.

Another problem you have is that some companies will call a virus by a different name...

Symantec call it B.zekrE.23W[at]....MM Also Known As: W32/b.ifaZ[at]MM [McAfee], Zafi.B [Computer Associates], W32/Zafi-B [Sophos], PE_ZAFI.B [Trend]

They also have a removal tool...
