News here.
Great news - the `old` way would have been a farce of grey areas - serving food etc.

Here`s to healthy lungs and clothes not stinking after watching the match in the pub. :D :D

As an ex-smoker, I`ll welcome this news, but oh gosh, you`d better believe the civil liberty bandwagon will start rolling..

Simon Clark, bloke from FOREST (pro-smoking group) said

Quote:
"This is a double whammy and an unnecessary and illiberal piece of legislation that denies freedom of choice to millions of people.

"The Government should educate people about the health risks of smoking but politicians have no right to force people to quit by making it more difficult for people to consume a legal product."

More difficult? How? Is this new law effectively stopping people from smoking? No it isn`t, it`s just preventing those that have chosen NOT to smoke from having to sit/stand in a smoky atmosphere inhaling diluted nicotine. Yes, a person has the right to smoke, but the 20 or so people standing around that one smoker, have the right NOT to have their air `polluted` by second hand smoke (sorry for the buzzword, all I could think of).

Bollocks mate. There`s nothing stopping that person smoking in the street or in his own home. I think this will affect the alcohol industry more than the tobacco ind.

good news indeed...

the campaign against cruel sports, got fox hunting banned... they are now trying to ban falconery...

next i think we will have to ban drinking, as passive drinkers often suffer illness and injury from those around them that are too
p1$$ed to control their own actions! >:(

and i am a non-smoker... if pubs could offer two rooms one smoking one non-smoking this would surely be better...

If you do that then you can be prosecuted. Soon the same will apply to smoking. :D
Silly argument though. The very act of drinking does not directly harm anybody`s health (but maybe their own). Smoking, on the other hand, does. Staff working behind a bar are not directly affected by the punters drinking. They are affected by smoking though.

Tell that to the bereaved families of drink-drive victims.
Or the woman who suffers domestic violence every night at the hands of her drunken partner.
When did you last hear of a man going home and beating up his wife because he`d had too many cigarettes that night.....or the football hoolgans beating up people cause of excess smoking?!

Getting into a car drunk or battering your wife or husband isn`t simply "the very act of dinking" though - it`s criminal behaviour.

I`m sure without drink inside them footballl hooligans are all *lovely* people...

Football hooligans are hooligans drunk or sober. Not all hooligans are drunk and not all drunks are hooligans. It`s very easy to stick people in pigeon holes and the media are guilty of encouraging that way of thinking in the population and politicians.

As a non smoker I`m going to differ with the general opinion on here.
Banning smoking in public places, great idea, totally support that but it`s no business of government what people do in private clubs.
