Page 1 of I am still shaking.........

Me and the wife were about to go out, when we noticed a load of smoke in the kitchen. Noticed that the Tumble Drier had caught fire and has basically gutted our kitchen.

Has affected me quite badly, I have never been in a fire before. I suffered a little from smoke inhalation and there is about £500 worth of damage to kitchen appliances.

What a day :(

thanks, we are both fine. I inhaled a bit too much smoke while trying to put the fire out, but other than that then fine.

We are insured, but I cant find the docs so am unsure of the level of excess.

Does anyone know the insurance claim procedure? Do we need to save all burned items for insurance inspection etc?

How did you manage to stop the fire from spreading, did you put it out yourself? I never let my girlfriend put the washing machine on at night for fear of a similar thing happen. I suppose at least be thankful it happened in the day? :o

Sorry to hear about the fire mate. Best to get your advice from your insurers. Give them a ring straight away and they will advise what to next.

As an ex firefighter I will not allow the Mrs to have the tumble drier on overnight or when the house is unattended. I have seen to many times the damage that a tumble drier can cause when they catch fire.
I also have a fire extinguisher (Dry Powder) on the kitchen wall in case of emergencies.

The main thing is you are both OK. Goods and appliances can be replaced, and I can`t see you having any problem with your insurance company. I imagine they will examine the machine to and check it out to find out the cause.

BTW do you have smoke detectors fitted?

It`s easy to get another dryer/cooker/kitchen, albeit stressful, but you can`t replace a life.

As WD says, I can`t see how your insurance company can argue, but be on the safe side and leave the stuff until you`ve spoken to them. They`ll ptobably say bin the sundry items but hold the appliances until they can examine them.

Hope they settle for you quick and you get sorted and back to normality ASAP.
On the point of extinguishers, as Private Hire I`m required to carry one in the car. These are also the type that can be used on electrical fires at home ( not dry powder, Co2 I think?), and you would be AMAZED how cheap they are! Small ones for as little as a tenner, larger for under £20. Doesn`t always mean you save the item on fire, but it does give you much more confidence and maybe feel a little less shaky afterwards :)

If you do decide to get an extinguisher, talk to your fire prevention officer at your local whole-time fire station and he will come to your home. Tell you what type is best and show you how to use it.

But remember folks. If you are unfortunate enough to have a fire the best bet is get everyone out and call the brigade.
