Just been for a beer with my Dad and my mate and I`ve come back from the pub with a question....

...and firstly I`d like to say that I am very embarrassed about the last thread I started and then *ahem* never responded to........and........

....a big apology to Ben Franklin. It was pointed out in that thread.....the I *ahem* started and then....that you`d posted a question that I NEVER replied to. Sorry dude, I have had a fair bit going on with the family and haven`t really had the time to sit and post anything for quite a while now. ......

Anyhoo, on to the point of the thread:

I bought a pack of Mini Cheddars and a bag of Twiglets to open for us to munch on with our drinks and my mate said...."hmm, Marmite. It`s made of Yeast Extract. What the f*ck is Yeast Extract? Is it yeast that has been extracted from something? If so, what? People with yeast infections? Or, is it something that is extracted from yeast? Again, I ask you what exactly would you extract from yeast?

Answers on a postcard purrrlease! :D

I used to work in Lewes, and when Harveys dumped its vats into the river the whole town smelt of marmite. :D

Could marmite be a by product of the beer trade?? :p

Credo!

Indeed it is - its the crap that gets left over after the brewing process - essentially it is rc[at]p, and marmite get PAID to take it away!

Yeast extract is basically the the dregs of the brewing vat after primary fermentation ie its the dead yeast at the bottom after the beer has been removed. :)

BTW My Mate Marmite (Cant stand Bovril or Vegemite).

I wanna work in Lewes (& it would make the wife seriously ill). ;)

Where I currently work it used to smell of Calpol, further down the road its the smell of roasted coffee beans.

I used to live in Burton-on-Trent and if the wind was blowing in the right direction you`d get a lovely smell of the stuff (was never sure if it was from the breweries or the Marmite factory). Very pleasant if you`re in your garden on a nice summer`s day...

Marmite is the toast topping of the gods. Excellent in gravy too.

Those of you who worship the one true yeast extract might want this book
