Liverpool Council votes for Smoking ban in public places

sj (Elite) posted this on Wednesday, 20th October 2004, 22:04

Looks like Liverpool are leading the way in trying to be the first UK city to make it illegal to smoke in restaurants, pubs, shops, offices and other enclosed workplaces.
Still got to go through Parliament where no doubt they`ll try to tame it down but I`ve got my fingers crossed.
First City of many I hope!! :D :D

Glad you`re happy.

Shame about all of us smokers.....or should that be `plague ridden murderers`??

Hope they make it illegal in your road to live there and not smoke.

good on em - perhaps i might be able to go out to restaurants/pubs etc with my 7 week old daughter and not worry about the s***e she has to breathe in due to some inconsiderate f**kers. >:(

Unless your smoking outside on a windy day - with the wind blowing in the opposite direction from me, then smoking shouldnt be accepted in ANY indoor public building.

Bring on the ban. Now.

All we need now is a ban on Scousers!

*ducks for cover... and puts on Kevlar vest*

Anyway, I fully support a ban on smoking! Too many times I`ve been on a packed train and some f***er stood right near me lights one up. The conductor can`t do s*** for fear of being stabbed or worse!

Yes, cigarettes taste, look and smell disgusting, I`m in favour of banning the scousers smoking in public, especially those in shell suits. Now I`d much prefer a nice Sunday joint......... ;)

The cynical muscle in my brain suggests (hopes, even) the Government won`t support this - the amount of revenue generated for them by smokers is phenomenal to say the least....

I`ve already argued that any such smoking ban should be a voluntary scheme for pubs and restaurants with a clear sign outside to state whether folks can smoke or not. I, as smoker, would have no problems going to a non-smoking pub or restaurant. Similarly, non-smokers should have the right to enjoy (or indeed work in) a smoke-free pub or restaurant - I accept that totally.

I just think we`re all being a little hysterical (in a Daily Mail stylee) here - people must be given a choice, be they smokers or non-smokers, publicans or restauranteurs.

Just my 10 cents anyhoooo.... :p

Sorry clayts, but where is my choice as a non-smoker? Find a pub that is non-smoking? Yeah right!! Like I`ve said before and I will say it continually.....to breathe non-nicotine air is natural so it`s not a case of choice. Only people who wish to pollute the surrounding air cry `it`s my right, it`s my choice!! So f*** the rest of you non-smoking health freaks!!` ;)

Err...not true! I aint smoked for 8 months as I`ve previously said, but I`d still leave it as a choice for those who do if thye wish to.
If it annoys me, I`ll move to a different position if I want to stay in their company, and if that fails, then I`d probably excuse myself and leave them to it.

And talking of breathing natural air....what`s next, we gonna ban all transport and walk everwhere? Oh, and means no horses too `cause the horses*** will probably contain carcinogens (sp?) too!

Seriously, I`m with Clayts on this one. I think personally it`s an infringement on the rights of those who smoke to say they just CANT, with no provision for "you can, but in this room or that room" etc etc, just "thats it, you cant smoke full stop"

Oh, and how about, in my case, I find excessive drinking very similar to how you regard smoking?
Smell of alchohol makes me feel ill, leaves the smell on clothing/in the car etc., and causes more trouble than anything else known to man (Except Bush! Lol)

I drive a Private Hire car, I accept I have to let people go to the pub then take them home.
Fortunately everyone who has felt ill in the car so far has asked me to stop so they can puke outside (coupla close ones though!), and I go through air fresheners at the rate of about 1 every two or 3 days (they`re supposed to last about 3 weeks), but it doesn`t mean I`m gonna stop them from hiring me even if it is only a couple of quid run!

Conversely I wont let anyone smoke now, but not due to my non smoking, due to some tit burning a small hole in my door panel and not telling me.
