Help and Advice Needed Please

I got a Toshiba laptop from dixon`s on 09/11/01 for £1000. The model is 3000-x4. The screen has failed and has stopped lighting up. I spoke to Toshiba who said my warrenty ran out in July 03 they gave me a number of a company who repairs laptops who wanted the best part of £500 to repair it. Spoke to dixons and they said "if you would have paid for the extended warrenty it would be covered". I need the laptop to for work. Any ideas?

Speak to your local CAB.

In Which? recently they had a section on electronics and how extended warantees are a waste of money because you`re already covered by law that an item should last for an acceptable amount of time. 2 years for a laptop is hardly acceptable!

neal. I get the jist of the argument but I get the feeling the smug bloke behind the counter might laugh in your face if on those grounds (and outside the year warranty) you asked them to fix it FOC.

We tried to get our TV repaired under the sale of goods act when it started playing up two months after our warantee ran out. When we went into the shop we bought it in, we were told that a reasonable period of time was one cycle; turning the tv on and flicking through the channels once!

After a month or so and several arguments with the manager of the store and head office, we tried to go to citizens advice, but they were always closed or the telephone answer phone was on. In the end, we gave up and bought a new tv, as this seemed to be the easier option.

neal73 is right - they`re required by law to repair items if they fail within `an acceptable period of time`. You can quite legally take them to the small claims court for compensation if they refuse to come good.

The TV story is a good one - I wonder how much they would have stuck to their guns if you had told them you would take out a large advert in the local press announcing that the TVs they sell are only expected to last one session...

Thanks for the advice. I have let a local PC firm take a look at it. They will inform me of cost before any repair is carried out. The problem I have is I need it for work and as I am self employed i am losing money every day it is out of action. The local firm should get back to me today. He seemed to think that it would "only be a bulb" so it should not be too expensive. I will let you know.

Thanks.
