After seeing All of Us Strangers a few weeks back (that no-one else seems to have seen lol), I only just got around to seeing this, despite it being on my watchlist for a year plus.
Anyway, thought it was absolutely superb, another top, top performance from Paul Mescal - and also his 'daughter' in the film Frankie Corio.
Similar to All of Us Strangers, a few teary moments and a few I'll need to think about further.
The film takes place in the 90s and is the tale of a recently but amicably divorced father taking his 11 year old daughter abroad on holiday and there are so many 'holiday' moments in there most could easily relate to.
For spoilers now - do not read if you've not seen it or have any intention of doing so - my take on it...
SPOILER:
I assume the dad killed himself soon after the holiday and the film is interspersed with what happened on the holiday, lots of which the daughter didn't see, and with footage taken on their new video camera.  As it ends, we see the video footage is on a TV screen and pans away to the now grown up daughter watching it.  She's probably watching it for the umpteenth time, trying and rightly failing to find signs of his huge depression that she didn't see, not just as an eleven year old, but that he kept so well hidden from all it appeared.  The reasons for his depression obviously aren't explained but I think there are a few suggestions that he could be gay and struggles internally with it?  In the film there's such a sad scene where the daughter is describing feeling 'down' and it's like you're sinking - without really knowing she's describing depression and what her dad's actually going through - really powerful stuff.
@admars, I actually thought of you a couple of times when writing this - would be really interested to 'hear' your thoughts if you get to see it..
