Cyberhome DVR 1600 DVD Recorder £59.94 at Asda

I was at my local Asda (Walmart Bristol Cribbs Causeway) and spotted these. Plenty of them available. I`ve noticed that these haven`t had the best reviews on this site but for that money it may be worth a try out.

Regards,
Geoff.

Well, as I`ve said before - avoid it! Mine lasted 2 days before overheating and then refusing to eject. Every disc I recorded (on various brands - Verbatim, Memorex, Imation, Mirror) all had read errors on, so if you want to use your PC to copy any discs you create or edit them, then forget it. Even at 60quid I wouldn`t go near it.

Cyberhome kit is notorious for overheating, they either put an underpowered fan in or not at all. I have a desk fan set up behind my video stack for general cooling and I`ve only had problems with my (bigger and hotter) Cyberhome 750 when I forgot to put the fan on.

At sixty notes I`d grab one.

You were probably looking at a USA web site, as they don`t use them over there.

I advise caution - not all ASDA stores are doing the 1600 for £60. My local is still quoting the £90 price they`ve been at for a couple of months. :(

Mine was £84.99 and that`s still the price in my local Asda stores. The first one I had ran quite hot and was buggy on recordings so went back. The replacement had different firmware and seems to run a bit cooler but I`m taking no chances and have put a fan behind it. Recordings are fine when they work.

Mine was also £ 84.99

The 1600 ME version ( ? mediatec chipset ; European version ) This has no fan but does not seem to run abnormally hot.
As well as being multi-region it plays DivX files well.
Although the `sharpness` may be a little soft it is perfectly acceptable.

To my surprise in addition to DVD +R/ +RW it also records to DVD -RW and DVD -R.
I am not yet sure whether it can satisfactorily ` finalise ` the latter to enable them to play in other DVD players, but they certainly playback on the 1600 recorder itself.

What experiences have others had with the ASDA version of this machine ?
