Review of South Park Volume 2

Introduction

The second of the 11 volumes of South Park currently available in region 2, covering episodes 5 to 8 of the first series. Even after a relatively small number of episodes, the series has already begun to find its feet.

Video

As with the first disc, another reasonable 4:3 transfer is on show here. It`s not perfection, but there aren`t that many problems with it.

Again, there are definitely some compression artefacts are on show, and you do wonder if they cut corners to squish this onto a DVD-5. Given the simplicity of the animation, it`s reasonable to expect a little more quality.

Audio

Same as the first disc here, a DD2.0 stereo track, perfectly adequate for the job. The French audio track is included again, with different voices for the characters. Once more some of their translations are toned down ! Maybe the French don`t like rude words, but I could have easily done a proper translation for them.

Features

Each episode is introduced by creators Matt Stone & Trey Parker, and these are just as funny as the shows themselves.

The disc also includes a general trailer for the show.

Again, you`re left with a feeling that there could have been more stuff included.

Conclusion

The next four episodes continue from where the first four left off.

"An Elephant Makes Love To A Pig" introduces us to an interesting biology project, and a bizarre attempt to cross-breed 2 rather incompatible animals. This gets our heroes involved with the mad geneticist who makes several appearances during the series, and he clones Stan. Some classic moments.

"Death" features the visit of Death himself, and features the people of the town protesting against "Terrance & Phillip", something which returns in the South Park Movie.

"Pinkeye" is that American TV show banker, the Halloween special. After a dead body receives a transfusion of a certain sauce used in cooking, the residents of South Park turn into brain-eating zombies, and more classic moments ensue.

"Tom`s Rhinoplasty" is probably the standout episode. Slightly odd teacher Mr. Garrison decides to have plastic surgery to help him in his quest to "screw hot chicks". Meanwhile the supply teacher who has taken over from him at the school is causing a stir with the boys, who are blissfully unaware that her gate swings the other way.

Some more great moments, and a must for fans. As before, not for the easily offended !
